Flying the F-15 Eagle

by Leland Shanle

When I was flying F-4 Phantom II’s as an instructor in VX-30; we had Test Pilot Candidates come over the hill from Edwards Air Force Base from time to time. They would do whats called a Qualitative Evaluation on the F-4. Basically after just a couple hour brief and a half hour sitting in the cockpit. They would get in the front seat and ring the old girl out on some crazy profile. Often quite a ride!

Everyone knew, especially test pilots, that the Phantom was always trying to kill a new guy, let alone a guy with no experience (which is why the Candidates picked it). So as a pay back for our trouble they let us come over and fly their aircraft. I flew the F-15 Eagle; watch the video and you will know why!
