Consolidation of the airline industry continues as Southwest Airline (SWA) enters the fray with a bid for Frontier. SWA just doubled down on their aggressive move into the Denver market. If their bid for Frontier is accepted this will be a much tougher merger than their past acquisitions.

A huge pilot shortage is looming, especially for the small Commuter or Regional Airlines. Recently proposed crew rest requirements will drive a need to hire more pilots. Pending legislation will slash the available pool of Federally Qualified Part 121 (scheduled carrier) airline pilots.

I found this article on the back pages of ATW; it details airspeed problems on Air France Flight 1905. The problems were again associated with the pitot system of an Airbus. However there was a very significant data point: it was a 320 not a 330/340 series aircraft.

It only took 19 years. The NTSB started pushing pilot fatigue issues in 1990, no action was taken.
